LAGOS, -- Roman Catholic bishops in Nigeria have warned that the
introduction of Islamic Sharia law in some states violates the human rights of
non-Muslims and is a threat to peace in the country.
At the end of a three-day session in Lagos, the Catholic Bishops Conference of
Nigeria said it would use every legitimate means to prevent the imposition of
Sharia law on non-Muslims.
The bishops urged northern leaders to respect Nigeria's secular constitution.
Several states in northern Nigeria have adopted Islamic law over the past two
years.
There have been a number of clashes between Nigerian Christians and Muslims
recently.
Earlier this month more than five-hundred people were killed during fighting in
the city of Jos.
