Govt will include religion in passports, says Shujaat

Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain, the Pakistan Muslim League (PML) president, on Tuesday assured Mualana Samiul Haq, the Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) vice president, that the government would insert the religion column in the new machine readable passports.

The PML president told the MMA leader in a meeting that the PML Central Executive Committee had recommended to the government it insert the religion column in the new passports, according to a press release.

Both leaders agreed to evolve consensus and to work jointly to thwart efforts to create misunderstanding between the government and religious parties. They also discussed the political situation in the country.

The PML president said President Pervez Musharraf always praised the services of the religious seminaries. He said that according to a survey, no religious school was involved in training terrorism. The survey was conducted under Chaudhry Shujaat as interior minister. Maulana Sami assured Chaudhry Shujaat that he would continue to support the government to bring about harmony between the government and religious parties.
