MMA wants religion listed in passports

Pakistan - The Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA) on Saturday submitted an adjournment motion to the National Assembly Secretariat demanding a debate on the deletion of information on religion from electronic passports.

“The government has deleted the column for religion from electronic passports, which indicates a conspiracy by the Ahmedi lobby,” the motion said. It said that religion was mentioned in old passports to ensure that non-Muslims do not enter Mecca. The motion said that there had been earlier attempts from religious groups to have religion information deleted from voter lists, but they failed.

The MMA urged the government to include religious affiliation information on passports and on National Identity Cards. The motion was submitted with the signatures of 20 MMA parliamentarians.
