Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri said on Monday religious teaching in the country must refrain from creating militant and fanatic people who tend to make enmity with other religious groups.
"Religious teaching that brings about enmity between two different groups will only erode the good tradition and the tolerance of our people," Megawati said at the opening of the working meeting of Religious Affairs Ministry officials, held at the state palace here Monday.
The president was quoted by ANTARA news agency as saying that it is felt that current religious instruction has created fanatics who claim to be the best and who make enemies of those who disagree with them.
"We have also witnessed the emergence of a certain group of people who think its religion is the most superior and is easily offended," Megawati said.
She also urged participants of the meeting to tackle the relevance of substances and methods of religious teaching to the present situation.
