Indonesian police quiz 10 in Java for promoting Islamic

JAKARTA, Jan 14 (AFP) -Police said Monday they have detained 10 people for questioning on suspicion of promoting the establishment of an Islamic state in Indonesia.

"The 10 are still being questioned here," said Ramdhoni, a detective in Bandung, the capital of West Java.

He said the 10, mostly young men, were arrested in a densely populated slum area of the city on Sunday.

Ramdhoni said their arrests were linked to their efforts to promote an Islamic State of Indonesia but declined to give further details until their questioning is over.

Indonesia is the world's largest Muslim-populated nation with close to 90 percent of some 216 million people following Islam.

But the government views any attempt at imposing a state religion as subversion.

The Islamic State of Indonesia movement was active in several provinces including West Java in the 1970s and 1980s. But it faded in the 1990s following repressive measures by the Suharto government.
