One dead in clash between rival groups in Orissa

Tension is running high in an Orissa village after one person was killed in a clash between two rival groups of a Christian sect.

The clash occurred Wednesday evening in Jhalarsingha village of Gajapati district when two rival groups of the Baptist sect tried to forcibly lay claim to the village church, police told IANS Thursday. A 30-yeat-old man died when the two factions clashed.

The village has a population of about 300 people with at least 200 belonging to the Baptist sect. The village church has remained closed for some time and no religious activities have been held for the last 15 years due to the running feud between the two groups, police said.

Extra police forces have been deployed in the village to maintain order.
