Pakistani Shiite preacher shot dead in Lahore

LAHORE, Pakistan - A Pakistani Shi'ite Muslim preacher was shot dead in the central city of Lahore on Monday in the latest sectarian killing to hit the country, police said.

"(Syed Rizwan-ul-Hassan Shah) was sitting in his shop when two men on a motorcycle came and shot him...and killed him on the spot," a police official told Reuters.

"It was a targeted sectarian killing," he added.

Shah's shop was located in an area of Lahore known to be a hub for activists from Sipah-i-Mohammad, a militant Shi'ite Muslim faction.

Pakistan has been grappling with frequent sectarian strife between militants from the majority Sunni and minority Shi'ite Muslim sects, which has claimed hundreds of lives in the past decade.
