Gunmen Kill Activist in Pakistan

MULTAN, Pakistan (AP) - Two gunmen killed a Shiite Muslim activist and wounded another Saturday in the latest round of religious violence in Pakistan, police said.

Nayar Abbas, 30, a member of the Organization for Shiite Muslim Law, died instantly in the attack in a congested neighborhood of Shorkot, 75 miles east of Multan in Pakistan's eastern Punjab province.

Altaf Hussain, 29, a local leader of the group, was wounded, police said. The attackers fled on a motorcycle.

p>No group has claimed responsibility.

Police regularly accuse the extremist Sipah-e-Sahaba, or Guardians of the Friends of the Prophet, for carrying out deadly attacks on Shiite Muslims. Sunni Muslims are the majority in Pakistan, while Shiites make up about 15 percent of the population.

Sipah-e-Sahaba wants the government to declare Shiites non-Muslims because of their beliefs.

In recent years, hundreds of people have been killed by militants belonging to small but heavily armed extremist groups of both Muslim sects. Most Sunni Muslims live peacefully with the Shiites.
