MUSLIMS have attacked each other on the Indonesian island of Lombok amid
tensions over differing forms of the religion, an official has said.
Mobs damaged eight houses and a mosque belonging to members of the Islam
Jama'ah sect in Pringgabaya in eastern Lombok over the weekend but there were
no casualties, East Lombok district spokesman Ahmad Mugni said.
Selong, the capital of East Lombok, could not be reached by telephone today with Telcom officials saying the line was disrupted for technical reasons.
The mob deemed the Islam Jama'ah to be preaching and practising a deviant form of Islam.
The attack came despite efforts by the local police and administration to calm the local population through a meeting with its religious and civic leaders.
