A bill to allow women to become priests in the Wangaratta
diocese of the Anglican Church has once again been rejected.
Wangaratta is one of only two dioceses in Victoria which still refuses to
ordain women.
The bill was up for consideration at a meeting of representatives from parishes
across the region over the weekend.
Parishoner Judy Wilkinson says there is still a very strong feeling among
clergy members that women should not be priests.
"It was a bit down-heartening that we still have numbers of men, and I
suppose it's about 50 per cent of the clergy who feel very strongly that they
couldn't work with a bishop in a parish where there was a woman priest,"
she said.
