Sharia Takes Off in Borno

Borno State would on June 1, join other northern states in the full implementation of the sharia legal system.

The state governor, Alhaji Mala Kachallah announced this when he received the interim report of the state Sharia Implementation Committee at the weekend.

He said the date, proposed by the committee as part of its recommendations for the successful implementation of the legal system was in order and government would ensure that it became a reality.

Kachallah announced that a committee would soon be set up to study the report with a view to providing all the necessary facilities, personnel and conducive environment for the take off of the system.

While assuring people of other faith of guaranteed freedom to practice their religion without hindrance, the governor stated that implementation of sharia was the desire of the majority of the people of the state who wish to live a decent life in conformity with the teachings of Islam.

The chairman of the committee who is also the Vice Chancellor of University of Maiduguri Professor Abubakar Mustapha had, while submitting the report, listed a number of conditions that must be fulfilled if the legal system should be genuinely implemented.

Firstly, he stated that the four laws on sharia administration of justice in the state must be reviewed and amended and the implementation must be gradual and multi-dimensional.
