Coptic cathedral in Cairo hosts Ramadan Muslim prayers

Cairo's Coptic Christian cathedral hosted Muslim prayers and a banquet for the holy month of Ramadan, the official MENA news agency reported.

The dusk prayer was held before the annual "iftar," the banquet which breaks the daytime Ramadan fast, offered by the Coptic patriarch, Pope Shenuda III.

The imam of Al-Azhar, the world's leading Sunni Muslim authority, Mohammed Sayed Tantawi, led the prayers and Prime Minister Atef Ebeid along with several other ministers took part, MENA added.

MENA quoted Shenuda and Tantawi as stressing in speeches the need to preserve national unity. Tantawi praised the Coptic church for hosting an iftar each year, an initiative launched two decades ago.

President Hosni Mubarak's younger son, Gamal, attended the banquet at St. Mark's Cathedral.

The Egyptian president last year made January 7, the day on which Copts celebrate Christmas, a national holiday, as part of efforts to encourage inter-faith dialogue.

Copts account for around five million of Egypt's 66 million population, according to official figures. However, the Coptic Church says its flock numbers as many as 10 million.
