The church of Christ in Nigeria (CCCIN) rose from its 55th session of the General Church Council (GCC) meeting in Jos at the weekend calling on government to seriously take stringent measures against perpetrators and sponsors of violence, bloodletting and destruction of lives and properties in some states of the federation, including Plateau state.
In a 16 point communiqu‚ signed by COCIN President, Rev. Alexander Lar and General Secretary Rev. John Audu, the council frown at the amount of violence, bloodletting and destruction in Jos... a number of states and indeed Nigeria "saying that government should treat with dispatch reports of panels set up in the past to investigate remote and immediate causes of the riots.
Specifically, the council "condemns in strong terms actions of mischievous persons and wonders why Christians and church building are always the first and main targets of attacks, as witnessed in Jos on May 2, 2002 during the congress of a political party.
The COCIN council affirmed "democracy is not akin to lawlessness and threats to lives and properties." It therefore called on the federal and state governments as well as law enforcement agencies to always provide adequate security to citizens and potential investors in the face of threat.
