Concerned about the violence across the country, the Diocese of Lagos, (Church of Nigeria), Anglican Communion has called on politicians to work vigorously towards the enthronement of peace and unity in the country.
The synod of the Diocese who made this known on Sunday in a statement signed by the Bishop of Lagos and Archbishop of the Ecclesiastical Province of Lagos, Most Rev. (Dr.) Ephraim Adebola Ademowo said the prevalence of peace in the society was the essential pre-requisite to meaningful development.
Obviously alarmed at the barefaced acts of religious intolerance perpetrated in the northern part of the country, the synod condemned the act of destruction of churches, attack on Christians, burning or demolition of churches and revocation of Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) among others in the northern part of the country.
Commenting on the state of the economy, the synod wanted the service providers of the Global Communication System (GSM) to reduce the cost of per minute and second calls.
The synod said the creation of employment for the university and polytechnic graduates, stabilising the foreign exchange rates, de-emphasising the running of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) at a profit as well as ensuring regular power supply would improve the nation’s economy.
While urging the church to ensure good governance at every level of the nation’s political structure, the synod called on the church to be financially self-reliant, missionary-minded, consistent in word and deed, care for everybody, spiritually and dynamically demonstrate the love of Christ in all things.
According to the synod, the church should take seriously healing, social welfare, education, environmental sanitation, assisting in creating jobs for the jobless, taking the gospel to every nook and crannies and non-compromising seriousness to spur the government for good governance and for removing discrimination.
