OPC, Muslim Worshippers Clash in Lagos - 3 Dead

IN a fresh wave of violence, the peace in Ipakodo community, Ikorodu, a satellite town in Lagos, was disturbed with three persons feared dead, and four wounded when the Gani Adams-led Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) clashed with worshippers in the community.

The clash which pitched the OPC against some Moslems in the community led to the burning of some mosques, a church, homes and shops allegedly by the OPC members.

Also, palace of traditional ruler of the community was torched by the mob, during the attack which occurred Monday.

Police sources in Lagos told Daily Champion that trouble started when armed members of OPC, had some disagreement with worshippers at a mosque to honour a wedding invitation.

According to the source, inability to manage the understanding brought out the worst in both groups as they went for each other torcing churches, mosques and private homes.

The incident started at a wedding exercise at the Muslim praying ground near the community abattoir, and snowballed into full attack and counter attack on both sides," the source said.

As at press time, three mosques, a church, shops, the traditional rulers palace and the home of one Alhaji Tandi, were destroyed by the OPC members.

In a counter attack, however, an OPC shrine and the Ogun shrine at Ipakdo town hall, Igunkon shrine and Mobolowa shrines were also destroyed.

Though identities of those said to have died was undisclosed, police sources said no fewer than 10 persons have been arrested in connection with the attack.

However, the attack was brought under control following mobilisation of anti-riot policemen from MOPOL 22, as those who confronted the fighters from Ikorodu Divisional police station, were almost overpowered by the mob who were armed with machete, guns, and other dangerous weapons.
