Police Alert On Religious Crisis in Lagos

The Lagos Police Command said yesterday that it had uncovered a plan by some religious fanatics to unleash mayhem on Lagosians during Ramadhan and Christmas festivals.

In a statement made available to THISDAY, Lagos State Commis-sioner of Police, Mr Mike Okiro, revealed that intelligence reports by detectives of the command indicated that "some faithful of some religious groups were planning to foment trouble during the two festival periods."

Okiro warned such people to desist from fomenting trouble as the Lagos State Command was fully prepared to deal with anyone found causing a breach of the peace.

Okiro advised Lagosians to be extra vigilant and security conscious. He said the people of Lagos and visitors coming into the state for Sallah and Christmas shopping should avoid carrying huge sums of money.

Instead of carrying huge sums of money, such people, he advised should make use of money transfer through "electronic banking even if such large amount holder had no bank account in Lagos."

Okiro advised those who might be taking their family members out on picnics or shopping to be extra conscious of security.

Drivers, he advised, should use their inner and side mirrors to monitor other vehicles to identify any suspicious movements around them.

As he said if: "one notices that a particular vehicle had been trailing one for a long period, the safe thing to do is to drive fast and divert into a nearest police station and wait for a while. A complaint could be lodged with the police if such a vehicle trailing you stops at a distance from the police formation."
